New Metal Review: Wretchedpain - The Great ReAwakening (ft. Mark Hunter)

This is not the first time I have written about Wretchedpain and it certainly will not be the last time you hear about them, with the bands release of their killer new track, The Great ReAwakening. The track is four minutes of brutal groovy death metal, featuring none other than ex-Chimaira front man Mark Hunter sharing the microphone with Joey Glacken on vocals. The track starts with a deliciously heavy groove followed by a blast from Hunter, reminding me a lot of the Impossibility of Reason days (which is a very good thing). The instrumentals throughout the track are also top notch. The guitar work is flawless; providing a brutally heavy, yet impossibly groovy framework for the song to build off. Furthering along the brutality was the awesomely executed drumming throughout the track. If this wasn't already enough I also absolutely loved the lyrics throughout the song, drawing on themes of generational laziness, apathy, and enlightenment or lack there of. Check out the song below and make sure to check the band out if you like what you hear! Get touring info and download music from Wretchedpain @ www.facebook.com/Wretchedpain & www.itunes.com/wretchedpain.

 - I was already excited to hear new material from Wretchedpain, but combined with the added bonus of Mark Hunter on the track; you got yourself a volatile and lethal combination. Any attempt to not like this song is "FEEBLE AT BEST" (and if you didn't get that reference listen to the goddamn song).
My Verdict

5/5 - Pure Canadian Metal at its finest!

Kataklysm, Suffocation, Jungle Rot, Pyrexia, Internal Bleeding & Wretchedpain @ The Opera House, Toronto (Nov 1/ 2014)

Don't call the Center for Disease Control quite yet, as tonight the absolutely stacked Carnival of Death tour swung through Toronto, leaving a trail of bodies and destruction in its wake. The night opened up with some local homegrown talent, as the boys of Wretchedpain primed the audience for an evening of death metal at its finest. Things only got better from there as slam legends Internal Bleeding and Pyrexia took the stage next. Both bands played killer sets, even sharing the stage at one point for a killer metal duet which practically shook the Opera House off its foundations. By the time Jungle Rot took the stage, the crowd was completely amped (and buzzed up), ready for the old school death metal gods to annihilate and melt their faces. As if Jungle Rot playing Strangulation Mutilation wasn't already enough metal pleasure, Suffocation took the stage shorty after and crushed a killer set full of old and new tracks. While there seemed to be quite a loss of momentum and energy between the two headlining bands, the night ended on a high note after Kataklysm took the stage. It only took a brief pep talk between songs to wake the crowd up, and the energy soon returned to the venue with Kataklysm igniting the crowd time and time again as they played their set. The Sasquatch couldn't have asked for a more stacked bill, scratching 5 death metal giants off my "must see" list! As always, a special shout out to the old school motherfuckers in the pit as well as all the bands! /,,/ Here are some pictures from throughout the night.

Death Metal Showcase: Wretchedpain

With a wide margin of Ontario's metal scene flooded with bands looking to break though the classic molds of metal, pure old fashion death metal is hard to come by. Thankfully for us, Wretchedpain is keeping the spirit of death metal alive, helping the masses remember the brutal awesomeness of pure unfiltered, no bullshit death metal. While Wretchedpain formed over a decade ago, they released their debut album "Conregratation" in 2010. The end result was a masterpiece professionally mixed and mastered by veteran Chris "Zeuss" Harris, producer to metal giants such as Hatebreed, Chimaira, Whitechapel, and Shadows Fall. The album was a huge success for the band, receiving considerable attention and inspiring many a head-bang along the way.  Since then Wretchedpain has toured excessively, undertaking relentless gigs and festivals through the years; playing alongside big names such as Cryptopsy, Napalm Death, Threat Signal, Suffocation, Baptized in Blood, & The Faceless.

In the summer of 2013, Wretchedpain released their new EP "The Hell You Seek", with the help of Jean-Francois Dagenais of Kataklysm for mixing and mastering. The result is another excellent example of pure technical death metal in its finest form. Wretchedpain combines a wicked classic death metal drumming style with an intense groove and brutal heaviness on guitar and a consistent aggressive vocal track. I love every song that this band has released so far; providing me with the heart pounding aggression and power that I love the most in metal!

Wretchedpain is a band determined to be heard; and with the band recently returning from a two-week European tour and a plethora of gigs on the horizon, the Yeti has his money on these boys to make it huge. You can check out Wretchedpain's music live at their upcoming show at the Wacken Metal Battle in Toronto (April 4, 2014 @ the Rivoli), where they perform for a spot to play at the Wacken Open Air festival in Germany. As well, you can also catch them at the upcoming Chaos Fest in Hamilton (April 6, 2014 @ Club Absinthe) alongside Thy Art is Murder & Fallujah. Keep up to date with tour dates and music on the bands facebook site @ www.facebook.com/Wretchedpain and buy their music online @ www.itunes.com/wretchedpain. Check out their music below and make sure to give these boys the support they deserve!

- Bands like Wretchedpain are exaclty what the metal scene needs these days. A Band that delivers furious aggression and breakneck riffs, without relying on blast beats or breakdowns for mass appeal. With two killer releases under their belt already, Wretchedpain's future is bright, appealing heavily to the old school death metal crowds who are eager to embrace brutality at its best!
- Be sure to check out the band and share them with your death metal loving friends. /,,/ As always, Keep it heavy.

The Beards of Metal \m/

For some reason, may it be its raw power and authority or its curious sexual appeal, the beard is a prominent facial feature throughout the metal industry. While they vary drastically in shape, size, and colour, every self respecting metalhead has had or tried to grow an epic metal beard at one point or another. Yet, there is more to these beards than meet the eye; for they draw upon the forces of hell and fury to empower the artists to create metal of extreme proportions. The following is homage to some of the best beards I've seen in my local as well as global metal community. Feel free to leave links to your own beards to add to #TheBeardsOfMetal. Cheers to all my bearded metal brothers! Enjoy! \m/
